Momo Shift Knob Install

The stock shift Knob in our Project Mini Cooper S is a bit on the large size and not only that, it just looks as plain jane as it gets. Since we plan to have the entire interior of our Project car re-done in the near future, we decided to put in a Momo shift knob to add some originality to our now stock interior. Once the interior is re-done, this small change will make a big statement. The knob we chose to use is the Momo Sphere Aluminum knob, but any other knob could have been used with the same installation procedure.

1. The first step is to put the car in neutral. This allows you to center the shifter and grab the factory knob. Now push the shifter boot down just a bit to give you better access to the shifter itself. The way you remove the factory knob is to grip it tightly, and pull straight up on it. You will have to pull very hard to get the knob to slip out of the recess in the shifter.

2. Once you have the knob removed you will see that the knob has a groove in it that fits in the recess of the shifter and locks it in place. The new knob attaches in a different way, but if you ever need to re-install the factory knob, all you do is place it on the shifter and push down. The knob will lock right back down in place.

3. In this shot you can see a side by side of the factory knob and the Momo knob with all the parts that come in the Momo shift knob kit. The Momo kit includes the new knob as well as a few different size rubber reducer rings to fit shifters of all different sizes. It also has set screws and a finishing ring to make the new knob look like a factory fitment.

4. The next step is to fit each rubber reducer over the factory shifter until you find the one that fits snug on it. This reducer will allow the shift knob to fit on the Mini shifter and clamp on without coming loose. Once you have the correct reducer, insert it into the Momo shift knob and push it all the way to the top of the knob. You may need to use a small screwdriver to push it all the way into the knob.
5. Now install the Momo knob onto the top of the shifter. Also, do not forget to put the finishing base on first so when the install in done you can screw it on tot he shifter to cover the setscrews. Be sure you push the shift knob down all the way over the shifter. Then install the setscrews included in the kit. These will secure the knob to the shifter and clamp it in place. Use the Allen key provided to secure these set screws in place once you are happy with the fitment.

6. The last step is to screw on the finishing base included with the Momo shift knob to cover the setscrews. Once you have done this, pull the shift boot back up and you are all finished.
